How do I get past ATS resume screening?

Most applicant tracking systems do not secretly auto-reject your resume; they store, search, and rank applications so a recruiter can filter them. You get past screening by matching the language of the posting, using clean and parseable formatting, and tailoring each resume to the role rather than gaming a mythical robot.

The myth is that an ATS throws out most resumes on its own. In reality a recruiter usually searches and filters within it, so your job is to be findable and clearly relevant for the terms they will search. That means using the same words the posting uses for skills and titles, when they are genuinely true of you.

Formatting is the other half. Tables, text boxes, headers, and images can confuse parsing, so a simple single-column layout with standard section headings is safer. Save as a clean PDF or the format the posting requests, and do not hide keywords in white text, which backfires when a human reads it.

A keyword checker takes the guesswork out. GotHired has a free Resume Keywords Checker that compares your resume against a posting and shows matched keywords, missing ones, and quick wins, so you can close the gaps that matter before you apply.
